Discussion:
[Spacewalk-list] Kickstart from a “promoted” channel

I am stuck and I was hoping to get a little help.

I have a pretty simple setup where I have a Centos7 channel and I use koan to build VM's
that works great.  I would like to be able to use spacewalk-manage-channel-lifecycle to create a 'dev-centos7' channel and then use koan to build VM's from that dev channel.  The problem is that spacewalk-manage-channel-lifecycle doesn't clone the kickstart tree.  I am thinking I might be able to do it with Activation keys
but so far I have failed with that.

Does this seem reasonable or am I going about this the wrong way?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

RTFM is appropriate as well
as long as you point me to the right “FM”
documentation for SW is all over the map, and often times provides conflicting information. :-(

Thanks in advance,
Emmett

Let me try asking this a slightly different way:

Does anyone know if you can kickstart a system from a channel maintained with spacewalk-manage-channel-lifecycle?

(Sorry if I didn’t give enough time for an answer to this before
I’ve just been banging my head against the wall about it and I’m up against a deadline now.) :-(

Thanks,
Emmett

Good morning, Emmet.

I’ve been doing something like this for years, or more accurately, something like it, at my now former employer (I’ve been outsourced
..)

I don’t use spacewalk-manage-channel-lifecycle, but I do have a complete set of dev/QA/prod channels built from the direct downloaded channel sets. All of the server builds are performed through cobbler, hence koan, etc. I do manage the kickstarts directly and manually as a result. Every “family” has a master kickstart file that points to the appropriate base channel.

In short, you should be able copy a kickstart file and point it at your base channel, assuming your base channel has boot support. You should be able to boot & install from any base channel in your server.
